Why cold emails feel like spam (and how yours won't)

You know the emails. "Hi {FirstName}, I hope this finds you well. I wanted to reach out about..." You delete them without reading. Everyone does. So the worry is fair: if you email a stranger, won't you be that person?

You won't, as long as you avoid the one thing that makes those emails feel like spam. They could have been sent to anyone.

Spam is a message that fits everybody

A spam email has no idea who you are. It knows your first name and nothing else true about you. That's the tell. The moment a message shows it was written for you, and only you, it stops feeling like spam and starts feeling like a person reaching out.

The fix is one specific, true thing

Before you write, find one real detail about the person or their business. Something you actually noticed: a product they just launched, a role they're hiring for, a new location they opened. Open with that. Not "I hope you're well", but "saw you just opened a second spot by the harbour". Now the message could only have been sent to them.

Short, human, one ask

No wall of text. A couple of sentences: what you noticed, why it made you think of them, and one small ask ("worth a quick chat?"). Write like you'd message a smart acquaintance, not like a brochure.

This is the hard part, and it's the whole point
